Jamie Buchan graduated with an MA (Hons) in Economic History from Aberdeen University in 1981. From 1981 to 1995, he was employed by Esso UK plc in a number of senior executive roles across their retail petrol station and, latterly, upstream natural gas businesses.
After leaving Esso, he was worldwide Marketing Director for the oil services division of Ocean Group Plc from 1995 to 1997 before joining Centrica Plc to become Marketing and Strategy director of British Gas Services. He was also Marketing Director of the Automobile Association Road Services following its acquisition by Centrica in 1999.
Mr Buchan joined Whitbread Plc in March 2000 as Marketing and Strategy director for its new Pub and Bar Division and was involved in managing the sale of its 3,000 retail outlets to a private equity firm in 2001.
Mr Buchan was appointed as Chief Executive of ExCeL London in January 2002.
